Dramaturgy/Dramatwrgiaeth

“Alice was essential in coaching me through the writing process and helped refine my ideas. Alice was tireless in ensuring my vision for the piece was met and worked far beyond the hours assigned in order to complete it. I would work with Alice again in a heartbeat.”

I have worked predominantly with women-led projects, voices from under-represented backgrounds, new writing, and bilingual work.

I can offer:

– One to one support over a cuppa (virtual or in person).
– Written feedback support on scripts.
– One page bullet point feedback on scripts.
– Consultation services in a devising process or at the outset of a scripted/devising process.
– Consultations are available in Welsh/English/both.

I’m happy to negotiate a rate depending on what you might need.

I have a ‘pay-it-forward’ scheme where writers can donate a dramaturgy session to someone who would appreciate a FREE session, due to financial need.

Mi oedd cael y cyfle i weithio gyda Alice Eklund o Adran Lenyddol Theatr y Sherman yn brofiad gwerthfawr iawn. Mi wnaeth Alice fy nghefnogi a gweithio fel dramatwrg ar fy sgript Saesneg gyntaf. Mi oedd gweithio gyda Alice yn broses hwylus a chefnogol, oedd y gwaith yn datblygu mewn ffordd organig a gwreiddiol a gyda help Alice mi wnes i ffeindio fy nhraed i ysgrifennu mewn iaith wahanol i’r arfer. Mi oeddwn yn gweithio ar y sgript ar gyfer cystadleuaeth y Wobr Verity Bargate ar ôl gwneud gweithdy i’r wobr a drefnodd yr Adran Lenyddol. Wrth i’r dyddiad cau agosáu mi oedd Alice yn rhwydd a charedig iawn gyda’i hamser ac mi oedd y fersiwn olaf o’r darn cymaint gwell gyda mewnwelediad Alice. Yn sicr mi oedd o un o’r profiadau gorau o gyd-weithio i mi ei gael erioed.
Having the opportunity to work with Alice Eklund from the Sherman Theatre’s Literary Department was a very valuable experience. Alice supported me and worked as a dramaturg on my first English script. Working with Alice was an easy and supportive process, the work developed in an organic and original way and with Alice’s help I found my feet to write in a different language than usual. I was working on the script for the Verity Bargate Award competition after doing a workshop for the award organised by the Literary Department. As the deadline approached Alice was very easy with me and kind with her time and final version of the piece was so much better with Alice’s insight.
It was certainly one of the best experiences of working together that I have ever had.

“For a writer, knowing when – and with who – to share your draft can be a tricky decision. But Alice makes that decision easy. She’s the ideal person to share your work-in-progress with, no matter what stage you’re at. Want to bounce around a rough idea? Need an opinion on a finished draft? Alice wraps her expertise in such a friendly, encouraging approach that you come away feeling warmly affirmed in how far you’d got and freshly inspired for where your work will go next.”

Cefais y cyfle i weithio gydag Alice wrth ddatblygu ddrama Gymraeg awr o hyd, a chael budd mawr o’r broses. Yn ogystal â gwneud ymdrech wirinoeddol i ddeall a dehongli’r darn yn unol â ‘ngweledigaeth i’n bersonol, ofynnodd Alice gwestiynau pwrpasol a oedd yn fy hybu i fi ddatblygu a gwthio’r darn ymhellach ac ystyried beth oedd yn bosibl ei wneud ar lwyfan.
I got the opportunity to work with Alice to develop an hour long Welsh-language play I’d written, and her input to the process was incredibly beneficial. Alice understood and respected the vision and character of the original piece, but also asked the appropriate questions to encourage me to push my boundaries and further explore elements of the play from a directorial viewpoint.
